Also, it has been claimed that hospital lotteries can hurt a hospital’s reputation. If the public sees an organization as a promoter of gambling, an activity which is considered a thorn in the back side of society, the organization’s reputation will indeed suffer.

In March 2008, for example, the Princess Margaret Hospital hosted a series of lectures on cancer research for 700 lottery participants, something once done only for large private donors,” the Canadian Medical Association wrote.

Also, one should note that there is a great deal of risk for hospitals that organize lotteries. Back in 2009, Southern Health, an Australian hospital operator, lost almost $600,000 after selling just 60 percent of the lottery tickets. Hospital lottery prizes are not raised like those granted by a state lottery, so it is very hard to break even.

Also, not only players can become addicted to gambling, but hospitals too. The Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto used its own lottery to raise more than $200 million in the past 15 years or so. That’s about 30 percent of the hospital’s total funding, and losing it would prove disastrous. At the moment, that hospital can’t stop the lottery, even if it would want to, as it can’t afford the loss of revenue.

It would appear that the hospital lottery critics actually have a point, and they are not as good as some people believe.
