The New York State Lottery has decided to change its slogan. We’ve all come to know and love “Hey, you never know” but the lottery decided it needs something new. The new slogan is the spearhead of a new publicity campaign which started in May. The message is simple, “Be ready” and it means that all the people who buy lottery tickets should be prepared in the eventuality of a prize. The new slogan will not replace the old one. Instead, the “Good things can happen in an instant” will be used together with “Be ready”.
The message of the campaign is that it only takes a second to win one of the massive jackpots offered by the games designed by the New York Lottery. Radio and TV commercials are included in the $9 million budget of the new publicity campaign. According to statistics, the New York Lottery uses $30-40 million on advertisement every year. “We introduce 30 or 40 instant games a year,” Gordon Medenica, New York Lottery director, stated, “there’s a total of 60 to 70 in our inventory.”
The lottery is focused a lot on instant games, which have brought more revenue in the last fiscal year than draw games. $3.5 billion were brought in by instant games, while drawings only brought in $3.2 billion. Medenica says that is so because with the big drawings, like the Powerball or Mega Millions, everything is focusing on the big prize, which claims about two thirds of the funds. On the other hand, for instant scratch games, “80 percent of the prize fund does not go to the top prizes.” Lotteries
Also, it appears that while draws give out around 50 percent of the total funding, “in an instant, it’s 65 or 70 percent in prizes.”
“It’s a bit of a black art deciding which games to support before we have an idea of how they do,” Medenica said. Lottery results
The new publicity campaign is used to promote a new range of games, which yield a lot of prizes. The New York Lottery is hoping that the new campaign will help attract more and more people toward playing and buying more and more lottery tickets. After all, the more tickets you buy, the more chances you have to succeed, so “Be ready”.
