July 27, 2011

A recent financial report reveals that the Pennsylvania State Lottery is one of the most successful in the United States. The lottery has reported record profits for the last fiscal year, and we thought to give you an account on how it all began. US lottery

We should begin by saying that it is one of the oldest state lotteries in the United States. The Pennsylvania General Assembly created it on August 26, 1971, and its first lottery tickets became available on March 7, 1972. They used to cost 50 cents, and the drawing game offered a massive $1 million prize. Keep in mind that it was the early 70s, so one million dollars was an enormous amount of money. The following year, the lottery opened two new weekly games, and the first instant game was soon to follow. Lottery results

In 1977, the Daily Number game was launched. It became the lottery’s first numbers game, and players had to choose three numbers. Also, it was one of the first ever televised lottery games. At the dawn of the 80s, another numbers game was added to the lottery’s lineup. It was called Big 4 and it started out as a weekly event. But it was extremely successful, and it soon became a daily game. National lottery

In 1986, the lottery introduces a very innovative game, called Super 7. It was the first game of its kind, and it had an unprecedented success level. A year later, in 1987, with the occasion of the lottery’s 15th anniversary, the Saturday Spin game was introduced. It was a game very similar to the Set for Life game, which the New Hampshire Lottery will unveil tomorrow.

In 1988, the Pennsylvania State Lottery reached an incredible milestone. It had reached total sales of over $10 billion. The lottery’s success was mirrored by the astounding jackpots it offered. On April 26, 1989, the record for the biggest American jackpot was broken. Fourteen winners would split a $115.5 million annuity, the largest jackpot won in the United States until that date.

The 90s brought forth unprecedented growth, and the lottery’s total revenue exceeded $15 billion. Back then, it was the most successful lottery in the United States. Since then, the Pennsylvania State Lottery has become even more successful, with sales going up every year.
