PROFIT DECREASE FOR SOME STATE LOTTERIES
July 26, 2011

Even though many state lotteries reported record profits for last year, things were quite different for other similar institutions. Pennsylvania, Iowa, Delaware and Idaho all managed to raise amazing funds, but there are several lotteries that did not manage to reach their goals for the last fiscal year. US lottery

One of the most curious cases comes from Kansas. Even though the Kansas State Lottery managed to obtain record profits, its overall sales went down by 1 percent. Lottery results

“The lottery has accomplished this primarily through operational efficiencies, and we will be looking at further ways to reduce expenditures in fiscal year 2012,” Dennis Wilson, Kansas Lottery Executive Director, stated.

Arkansas has another lottery that did not manage to meet its own expectations. Projected profit levels were about $11 million higher than the real amount. Ernie Pssailaigue, the Arkansas Lottery director, said that profits went down by $7 million, from $105 million to $98 million. National lottery

“It was kind of a shock to all of us,” Commissioner Steve Faris stated.

Even though the Arkansas State Lottery managed to reach the $465 million annual revenue projection, it was held back by its commitment to scratch games. Scratch games usually cost more to manage.

“I think we need to come up with an aggressive program,” Pickard stated.

Things are about the same for the New York State Lottery, which is struggling to keep its own products competitive, but with little to show. Multi state games like Powerball and Mega Millions are choking the in-state games. The two multi state giants managed to get $60 million more in sheer profits. EACH!!

“I think players over time have come to realize that the winning experience isn’t as rich in Lotto as it is in Mega (Millions), Powerball or any of other draw games,” Gordon Medenica, New York State Lottery Director, stated. The Lotto and Sweet Million games were at an all time low. Sales for the Lotto game decreased by 15 percent, while the Sweet Million game managed to make 21 percent less.

However, even though the economy is very low, the overall figure for all state lotteries increased by about 3 percent.

“If we look historically, the growth over time has slowed down dramatically,” Lucy Dadayan, a policy analyst with the Rockefeller Institute, stated.
